Roads

A Road is a path between two different places which may be cities, towns, villages or hamlets. The road may not be the shortest path between two points, but it will be the route which motor vehicles will take as it has been paved or laid out for smooth travel. Roads have been build for thousands of years, earlier they were simple structures used for riding but today they are used for transport of thousands of tonnes of goods.

Since roads are a public utility, construction of roads in most cities is funded by the local self government from the muncipal taxes collected from the citizens and businesses in the area. Larger road projects, like national highways which span several states are managed by the central government of the country as they are a major infrastructure projects. The government departments subcontract the actually laying of the roads to private contractors. In some countries, selection of the contractors is a transparent process, but in many countries there are other "considerations", which results in  poor quality construction.

The direction in which traffic flows on the road varies according to the country. About a third of the population of the world drives on the left and the remaining population drives on the right.
